LUUV, Live from PHOTOKINA 2016
An amazed face during our live-testing at photokina
teamLUUV has made the trek to Cologne for the annual photokina trade show. photokina is the leading trade fair for all things photo and video, and brings the entire industry under one roof.
Many ideas and new themes present themselves at photokina, and in 2016 stabilization is certainly one of them, particularly for 360° cameras and VR. 360° video is most certainly making ground everywhere, and most notably in the amateur market. On Monday, Nikon announced their Keymission 360. Waterproof (to 30m), freeze-proof (to -10°C) and shockproof (to 2m), the Keymission 360 boasts two 20mp CMOS sensors, has replaceable batteries and costs US$499 — a highly competitive price in this market. The Keymission also has electronic image stabilization (post-capture), although as we know, this impedes the image quality drastically, and as it stands 360 cameras in the amateur price range are already noticeably lower in image-quality and stitching. External stabilization would be highly recommended, such as solidLUUV, which works with all 360 models, up to 500g.
On Monday GoPro also announced its new Hero 5 camera, Karma drone and an electronic gimbal. We got to have a go of the gimbal at photokina, and were relieved that it certainly doesn’t live up to the hype they were pushing. On the plus side, big companies pushing stabilization is great for the industry and draws in more people to understand what we are all about. But we are happy that our ACTION GIMBAL is already a lot better.
On that note, another key theme at photokina is the professionalisation of the amateur market. With video on social media booming, the people producing videos are more determined to produce high quality, stable and professional videos, so we are glad to lead the way here.
